What is Endodontics?

The word “endodontic” originates from “endo” meaning inside and “dontic” meaning dealing with teeth. Essentially, Endodontics is the specialty in dentistry that treats the inside of a tooth when a nerve has become infected. An Endodontist is a dentist who specializes in maintaining teeth through endodontic therapy involving the soft inner tissue of the teeth, also known as the pulp. Under the specialized care of an Endodontist, teeth can be restored to function and be a useful part of the patient’s chewing and aesthetics.

While all dentists are trained in diagnosis and endodontic therapy, occasionally a tooth proves to be more difficult to diagnose and treat. That is why you may have been referred to an endodontic specialist. In addition to dental school, Endodontists undergo two or more years of advanced education in this type of treatment. They study root canal techniques and procedures in greater depth, for diagnosis and treatment of more difficult cases. For this reason, many dentists choose to refer their patients to and Endodontist.

Diagnoses and Treats Pain

Oral pain, such as toothaches or cracked/fractured teeth, can often be complicated. Due to the vast network of nerves in the mouth and teeth, the pain of a damaged or diseased tooth is often felt in another tooth or in the head, ear or neck. An Endodontist is a specialist in diagnosing and treating this type of pain.

Treats Traumatic Injuries

Pulp damage is frequently the result of a blow to the mouth. An Endodontist specializes in treating these types of traumatic injuries. For example, a blow to a child’s permanent tooth that is not fully developed can cause the root to stop growing. In such a case, a procedure called “apexification” stimulates bone to be inserted at the end of the root, making it possible to then save the tooth through a root canal procedure. An Endodontist is specially trained in procedures for replanting teeth that have been knocked out of their sockets.
